SURFER BLOOD • ASTRO COAST
Supposedly recorded in a dorm room, and menacing shark album cover to match their name aside, the young Surfer Blood are out to prove that California 90’s style beach pop can come from Florida. Not exactly surf rock, just catchy guitar driven pop like Weezer or Pavement with the simplicity of the Feelies and the murkiness of the Stone Roses. Fun tracks like “Swim” (which could be a perfect single), “Take it Easy” and the instrumental “Neighbor Riffs” sound like floating on an ocean of guitar fuzz and echo while appropriately titled “Fast Jabroni” and “Slow Jabroni” reflect their affinity with the loser mentality. Thus, freshlings Surfer Blood don’t need a trendy location to create a scene, they may say “...meet me in Anchorage / That’s where the action is.” but all seems good in sunny FLA.
